A NEW brewery opening in Windsor is set to restore the tradition of brewing in the town after almost 80 years.

Planning permission has been given for the new enterprise on Vansittart Industrial Estate.

Co-founder Willie Calvert said: "As a Windsor resident myself, we are delighted to have received the go-ahead for our new brewery to be within sight of the castle.

"We think our beer will prove to be a big hit for locals and many of the 17million visitors who come to Windsor and Eton each year."

He added: "It's a tough time for the on-trade, as you can see from pubs closing here in Windsor, but we can help to lift the market - because you have to go out to drink great cask-conditioned beer.

"Local breweries are good news for local people, local pubs and local

The last brewery in Windsor, Burge & Co based in Victoria Street, closed in 1931.

The new Windsor and Eton Brewery will be set up in a 3,900 square foot unit and is expected to open in April using British designed and built brewing vessels.

The brewers are aiming to produce 30 barrels a week, with each barrel containing 36 gallons.

Another of the brewery's founders is Master Brewer Paddy Johnson. He said: "When I was Head Brewer at Courage there were perhaps just 50 breweries in the country - now there's over 700. That's fantastic for drinkers. But there's still not a brewery for the people of Windsor, Eton and Slough - until now. We're looking forward to serving you!"

The unit will be transformed by ex-Mars engineering manager Jim Morrison who will be overseeing the installation of the plant. For more information visit
